After 84 years, families finally bring Pearl Harbor cousins home

Two Indiana cousins killed at Pearl Harbor were missing for 84 years. New DNA testing finally brought them home.

WASHINGTON — For 84 years, Navy Sailors and second cousins Paul and Wayne Newton existed mostly in photographs, family stories and unanswered questions.

The pair died in December 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor

More than eight decades later came an email their families could not believe.

“It was out of the blue,” Paul Newton’s great-niece Rebecca Schmale said.

At first, her family assumed it was a scam.
