Birds classified as extinct in the wild hatch at Smithsonian Conservation Institute

FRONT ROYAL, Va. — The Smithsonian National Zoo just announced some big news in the world of conservation. A male and female sihek chick hatched at the zoo’s conservation campus in Front Royal, Virginia, last month.

That’s a big deal, as the bird — also known as the Guam kingfisher  — is among the most endangered species in the world. The bird is extinct in the wild and only exists as a managed population in zoos and breeding facilities.
