Fairfax Coounty Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano is defending his office by saying his policies reflect the values of the community.

FAIRFAX, Va. — The U.S. Department of Justice has launched a formal civil rights investigation into the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, amid allegations that the office has systematically provided preferential treatment to undocumented defendants over U.S. citizens.

The federal probe targets the office of Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, a Democrat who was elected in 2019 on a platform of progressive criminal justice reform. The investigation will focus on whether Descano’s charging decisions, plea bargaining, and sentencing
