Maryland has sanctioned girls’ flag football as a varsity championship sport, following rapid growth and key support from the Washington Commanders.
BALTIMORE — Girls’ flag football will officially become a state‑sanctioned varsity championship sport in Maryland beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, after a unanimous vote Friday by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA).
The decision marks a major milestone for the rapidly growing sport — and one strongly backed by the Washington Commanders, who have invested heavily in building girls’ flag football programs across the DC region, particularly in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
