Domestic violence cases in DC prompting a spike in cases of assault with a dangerous weapon, police say

Mayor Muriel Bowser and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro are proposing legislative changes targeting domestic violence.

WASHINGTON — As overall crime in the nation’s capital is going down compared to last year, the only category seeing an increase is assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the latest from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

“Although violent crime is down, domestic offenses are fueling an increase in assault with dangerous weapons, which are up 36%,” said D.C.’s Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll. 

Carroll added that out of the 24 homicides registered
