Mexican boxing icon Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez has long expressed a deep connection to his homeland and made it clear that he wants his dream farewell fight to take place in Mexico, but not at the famed Estadio Azteca.
“My comments were taken out of context; I never said that’s where my final fight would be,” Álvarez clarified to reporters Wednesday. “If and when I retire, my wish is to have my last fight in Guadalajara, the city where I was born and where my boxing journey first began.”
