Beltway outer loop crashes slow down morning commute

The cause of the crashes are still under investigation.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Crashes on the Capital Beltway outer loop are causing some delays in Montgomery County Wednesday morning. As of 6 a.m. some backups are stretching nearly five miles. Officials urge drivers to use alternate routes if possible.

Traffic officials first reported a crash involving multiple vehicles in the westbound lanes of the I-495 outer loop past MD-185 (Exit 33) in Montgomery County around 5:30 a.m. By 6:05 a.m., the Maryland State Highway Administration announced lanes were back open to traffic but some residual delays remain.
