Ben’s Chili Bowl set to reopen its historic U Street location, celebrating nearly 70 years in DC

WASHINGTON — Final preparations were underway Thursday for Friday’s re-opening of the original, historic Ben’s Chili Bowl location on U Street. It’s been closed since July 2025 for renovations, but stayed in business with a pop-up location across the street.

Ben’s Chili Bowl opened in 1958 and was an anchor in the corridor formally known as Black Broadway. After 67 years in business, it’s known internationally.
