Thousands gathered for DC’s largest Emancipation Day yet, celebrating progress and reflecting on racial equality, amid concerns about costs and safety in the city.

WASHINGTON — DC’s Emancipation Day celebrations were bigger than ever this year. The day commemorates April 16, 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln freed more than 3,100 enslaved people in Washington.

DC residents said the day was a way to celebrate how far the city has come, and recognize the work that is still left to be done.
