Well, this is different. We encounter many bestselling authors in our work, and it’s not uncommon that they are also public speakers or even keynote speakers. But to see an author and speaker whose next big move is a special one-night on Broadway performance? That got my attention. Here’s my interview with Lisa Nichols, who’s been featured in everything from the bestselling book The Secret to a past Oprah Winfrey guest.
When and how did you dream up a night on Broadway?
While a book and a movie are both fascinating, the thought of doing theatre was the ginormous leap that actually made my teeth chatter, and my knees knock. After The Secret, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Oprah, and Likes, I guess that I wanted to push my own boundaries past my comfort zone. Writing a new story that says, “dysfunctional dyslexic C students can, in fact, go from being broke and broken to playing Big and Bolder on Broadway”.
With so many amazing moments in your life, how did you choose what will make the show?
I started with the stories that I DIDN’T want to tell, the stories that I had decided never had to be told, but then realized that it’s in those very shameful, dark, and drama-laden stories that the audience will find their own will to rise, desire to soar and unbreakable spirit.
When crafting and creating this show, who was the audience you had in mind or who was this show really made for?
That’s easy. This show is for Unicorns who seem just a little (or a lot) different from those around us. The person who had to trust their own bounce-back muscle, who would never be comfortable sitting or down on their dreams, even if at times it looks more like a nightmare than a dream. I created this one-night show for climbers, the dreamers, for people who run hard, sleep little, serve high, and are determined, against all odds, to rise up again and again no matter what!
How would you categorize this one night on Broadway? Drama, Comedy, Dramedy, or something else?
We are launching a new industry, called Transfortainment – Transformation meets Entertainment
Dramability – Drama meets Possibility
InspaDrama – Inspiration from Drama
With you being the only person on stage, walk us through how you’ll present various parts of your life?
While I’m recreating moments of my life on stage, there will be a state-of-the-art multimedia background on stage that will flash critical moments of the storyline and allow the audience to catch a glimpse of real, actual moments and times in my life through real video and photo production.
Who besides yourself are you acting out on stage?
I will be playing two main characters, Lisa as she shows up to the world and “Shady Sadie, her inner toxic voice and influence”. I will transition smoothly into playing my supporting character roles like my son, my grandmother, my abuser, and my new husband.
What does your family think about you doing this?
After I say that I’m gonna be on Broadway, my family always asks the same question, “Broadway in Los Angeles or really in New York?” There isn’t even a theatre, as I can recall, on Broadway in Los Angeles. They’re used to me playing bold out on the skinny branch. They are super excited and planning to join me in New York.
